So, let me get this straight: We have a girl named Yamada, and she is going to high school for her first year. Okay, that's reasonable. But then they throw this in my face; her high school 'goal' is to get one hundred notches on her bedpost. Okay.. now we are entering the awkward, cringe territory. In other words, I prepared myself to see another anime dripping with fan service and sexual innuendo galore. And for the most part that's what it ended up being, but what the show does do for light hearted comedies, it does well enough to keep me watching.
I mean sure, a lot of teenagers think about sex, it's completely natural, right? Well, the way that Yamada comes off with the topic however, is so blatant that it comes off as really awkward at first. I don't know a lot of people who think like that as seriously as she does. When it comes down to it, I think this whole plot was just tacked on for the sake of the fan service the episode also offers up. It isn't as bad as other series though, such as Rosario + Vampire where every other scene is an extreme angled panty shot, so it's not much to bear with if you are looking for something more meaningful in the series.
When the episode tries to be meaningful though, it definitely falls flat. Scenes who intended purpose is obviously not supposed to be sexual related, end up being not taken seriously because of Yamada's train of thought. It get's irritating really, and this is only the first episode! I know, I know, it's a comedy, but sex doesn't always equal comedy in certain situations. For instance, Yamada is walking through a library and thinking about how Kosuda actually has some qualities besides his virgin status. But that just isn't like her so she has to throw in fantasies about how the library is the PERFECT place to get it on!
Character wise, Yamada, I have to admit, is pretty entertaining to follow once you get passed the whole sex partners debacle. She creates some pretty funny situations that are genuinely hilarious at times as well. (Mostly involving sex, of course.) What this episode does do right, it happens to do well; in this case it's the comedy. Sure, the God of Sex that floats around isn't really much of an advisor like she is intended to be, but hey, a mini floating female with a mustache is pretty funny in my books. And I have a feeling Kosuda's onii-chan will provide laughs during the series as well, having heard her comment about Kosuda's 'collection'.
The animation is alright, it doesn't look terrible that's for sure. It helps that I'm watching it in high def however. If per chance you are looking for a fresh take on the slice of life style of animation then you won't find any here.
Overall, the first episode really just left me with an impression of 'awkwardly funny'. I think as long as they keep the show light heartedly funny and try to not to derail moments with stupid sexual jokes, the show has a fairly good chance to be enjoyed well enough to be worth watching. And who knows, maybe Yamada will learn some morals.
